An introduction to making corn dollies
Saturday 20 July 2024, 10:00am - 01:00pm

In this workshop you will learn about the origins and history of the Corn Dolly, and then have a go at making your own to take home.

This practical workshop starts with making the traditional 3 straw plait known as a Countryman's Fancy. Building upon this straw plaiting technique, you will go on to make the more complex 'Sunspray'. All workshop participants will be required to bring with them a sharp pair of scissors and a 30cm ruler (not a tape measure). At the end of the workshop you will have your own corn dolly, or even dollies, to take home.

Your tutor, Angela Riley, has worked in the heritage and cultural sector throughout her life. Angela was introduced to the art of corn dolly making some 25 years ago whilst working at Church Farm Museum, Skegness and is now one of a very small group of straw plaiting tutors in the UK. Since then, she has developed and expanded the range of corn dollies she makes, including traditional variants which originated in South America, North Africa and Eastern Europe. Today, Angela works across Lincolnshire and the East Midlands and is in high demand to deliver workshops at heritage venues and events in our region.
