We are delighted to enable British Sign Language (BSL) users to contact us using a British Sign Language video interpreter, via the InterpretersLive! service, provided by Sign Solutions. The InterpretersLive! service is available on-demand 7 days a week between 08:00 – 00:00 via the StarLeaf app.

What types of interpreting are available via InterpretersLive?
NRCPD British Sign Language Interpreters are available on-demand, and they can be pre-booked too. You can pre-book:

  • Lipspeakers
  • Speech to Text reporters
  • Relay Interpreters
  • Makaton

What are the two types of video interpreting? VRS and VRI?
VRS - Video Relay service is when the people that want to communicate are all located separately from each other. The British Sign Language user and the Interpreter communicate over a secure video call, and the interpreter relays everything that is signed to the hearing person, the conversation relays back and forth from BSL to English and English to BSL.

VRI - Video Remote Interpreting is when the Deaf and hearing parties are together, and to communicate they dial a video interpreter via a computer, tablet or phone. The video interpreter translates between the parties in real-time. BSL video

How can I access the InterpretersLive! service?
If you are using a phone or a tablet, you need to download the StarLeaf app. Once you are in, please click on the phone icon and enter This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and click ‘make a video call’. An interpreter will then answer and connect your call. If you are using a desktop, you can download the app for Windows or Mac. BSL video

If you are using the service to make a card payment, please download the app as you will be able to use the interactive keypad within the app to complete your payment securely.

Is it free to use InterpretersLive!?
InterpretersLive! is free to use when you make a VRS call  or visit any of these organisations, trusts, councils and stores.

Are the video interpreters NRCPD registered?

All the video interpreters are qualified and NRCPD registered. BSL video

What do I need to use InterpretersLive!?

A tablet, phone or computer, and internet connection, Or 3G/4G/5G mobile data signal. BSL video

Is InterpretersLive! secure?

Yes, as an ISO27001 and Cyber essentials accredited provider, we use StarLeaf’s secure and encrypted platform to deliver our video interpreting service, via their app or WebRtc links. BSL video

Can you pre-book InterpretersLive! or is it just on-demand calls?

Yes, you can pre-book NRCPD qualified British Sign Language Interpreters and other types of communication support 24/7/365. Check out our on-demand availability on our website. BSL video

Can you only access video interpreters via the StarLeaf app?

On-demand BSL Interpreters are available via Skype for Business or StarLeaf. However, pre-booked interpreters are available any video platform at anytime! BSL video

Can InterpretersLive! call me back?

Yes. If you call in via the Starleaf app, we can call you back by dialling your email address. If you are not around we can leave you a BSL video message to retrieve on your return. BSL video

How can hearing people call me?
They dial 0121 285 2733 from any phone and the Interpreter will then make an onward video call to you. BSL video

If the call I make is not answered can I leave a message?

Of course! If the call is not answered you can leave a voicemail for the recipient or a BSL video message for a BSL user. BSL video

Can I choose the BSL Interpreter I want?

Yes, if you want to pre-book a video or in-person interpreting session, we can book your preferred or named interpreter. BSL video
