Campaign to encourage new food businesses to register with us

Following a rise in the number of new food businesses during the pandemic, we are joining the Food Standards Agency (FSA) campaign and calling for all new food businesses within Bolsover District to register with us via the digital service.

There has been a huge increase in food being sold from people’s homes with the internet making it easier for this type of market. According to the FSAs Register a Food Business digital service (RAFB), 37% of new ventures registered since the start of the pandemic (March 2020) are run from domestic kitchens at private addresses.

It is also known that many of these home-based sellers do not consider themselves to be a food business and therefore have not registered with their local authority. As a result, some newly established home-based sellers could be putting consumers at risk because they haven’t demonstrated good food safety knowledge.

Cabinet Member for Environmental Health, Councillor Deborah Watson said, "If you cook, store, prepare or sell food then you must register with us immediately so we are aware of your work and can carry out a food hygiene inspection. Without registration we cannot assess the nature of the business and give a Food Hygiene Rating and provide the necessary advice and help a business may need.

“Registration is free and can’t be refused. If you are already trading and have not registered, you need to register as soon as possible as this is a legal requirement.”

All food businesses within Bolsover District have a legal obligation to register with us 28 days before opening and it is an offence not to do so. Businesses must register whether they sell food via social media (Facebook Marketplace or Instagram store), sell via e-commerce sites such as Amazon or eBay, trade from a physical customer-facing premise or simply run a food business from a home kitchen. Businesses must also register with us if they are taking over an existing food business.

Register a Food Business digital service
The FSA’s Register a Food Business (RAFB) digital service, has been running since September 2018. Traditionally, food registrations were completed on paper and submitted manually for processing. The RAFB service to digitise this is for the benefit of local authorities as well as making it easier for food business operators to register and receive useful guidance at the point of registration.

If you have not registered or are setting up a new food business in Bolsover District then please make sure you register with the Council so we can provide the help and advice you need.
