Steve Fritchley, Leader of Bolsover District Council met with Sarah Smith from Old Bolsover Yard and Visit Bolsover recently to discuss the development of the town and how to encourage more tourism into the area.
Bolsover Castle attracts over 100,000 visitors every year, but few of these venture into the town to browse around the shops or call for a cuppa and a bite to eat.
And with the tourist industry and local high street opening up again Steve and Sarah both share the vision of developing what the town can offer.
Councillor Steve Fritchley said, “We have one of the best and biggest assets in the region right on our doorstep and we need to start and take full advantage of it and the number of people it brings into the town.
“We have to start focusing on the positives our town provides rather than the negatives and entice visitors to spend time exploring the town.
“I am very impressed with what Sarah has done with Old Bolsover Yard and it is this kind of enthusiasm and entrepreneurialism that can help develop the town into becoming one of the premier tourist destinations in the area.”
The pair discussed the newly formed Visit Bolsover group that is aiming to promote tourism in the town and how promotion can help attract more visitors.
Sarah Smith from Old Bolsover Yard shared this optimism and said, “Bolsover is such a lovely town with many historical features, some lovely independent shops and parks and walks that can provide visitors with a good enjoyable family day out. Why can’t we be a Bakewell or an Ashbourne?#
“So with just a bit more of a coordinated approach and some better marketing we can hopefully encourage more people to visit us, see what we have to offer and help Bolsover thrive again.”
Old Bolsover Yard is an exciting project that has brought new life to a previously underdeveloped site in the main part of Bolsover and consists of a number of craft workshops for new and up and coming businesses, as well as a Gallery.
The development of Bolsover Town forms part of the Council’s ‘Vision Bolsover’ prospectus that looks to provide every corner of Bolsover District with some level of funding, investment and promotion.
