Dog walkers warned about scam fines

We are warning local residents to be on the lookout for scam artists who are impersonating council officials and targeting dog walkers.

We have received reports of dog walkers in South Normanton being approached by a person in a black uniform complete with camera’s, stating they are a council officer and issuing on the spot fines of £80 to people who have let their dog off the lead.

We are urging dog owners to be wary of this scam and not hand over any money if they are approached and to also ask to see identification of who they are.

Council officials will always wear uniform marked with the Council logo and either ‘Environmental Enforcement’ or ‘CAN Community Action Network’, carry an ID badge and will never ask for cash on the spot.

Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Councillor Clive Moesby said, “This is disgusting. We are in the middle of a global pandemic and have individuals preying on people who are just going about their daily business.

“We have to put a stop to this type of criminal behaviour. These people may look authentic, but please don’t be fooled and I would urge anyone who is approached in this manner to ask for ID and never hand over any cash on the spot.”

If anyone is still unsure of who the person is then please contact the Council on 01246 242424 immediately so we can verify if it is legitimate or not.
