Performance

Our performance is what you measure us on. Whether this be emptying your bin on time, making sure your housing repairs are done correctly or dealing with planning applciations within government timescales. We are committed to continuous improvement in our services and have a well established performance management system, which ensures we set clear objectives with challenging targets and that we monitor our achievements against these regularly.

We self assess these achievements and have regular external inspections of our services, activities and plans so that we provide efficient and cost effective services to you. We believe that performance information is important as it enables us and you to see how well we are delivering our services and where we need to make improvements.

We produce a scorecard every six months which shows how we are performing against a mix of service targets of interest to customers and residents.

Annual Report

Every year we produce an annual report to our shareholders, you. The annual report includes highlights for the year, information regarding our performance and a summary of our accounts, so you can see what we have been up to and doing on your behalf.

Strategic Alliance Annual Review

We formed our Strategic Alliance with our neighbours North East Derbyshire District Council in April 2011 and during this time our progress has been fast and we have shared some considerable achievements. So, with this in mind, we now produce an Annual Review of the Alliance which details what we have achieved to date and also highlights what our shared plans for the forthcoming year are.

Audit Reports

All councils have to publish a Statement of Accounts covering specified matters. It shows how we have used public money, and that we have been honest and responsible. We try to make the accounts meet the needs of a wide range of stakeholders, but to see how well we deliver individual services you may also want to look at our Annual Reports.

Our external auditors conduct a full and detailed examination of the draft accounts, which underpins their accounts audit letter.

The Statement of Accounts

The Statement of Accounts is an annual publication that sets out exactly what we spent. This publication is designed to fit in with the latest regulations and guidance on the production of accounts for local authorities. The Annual Governance Statement is summarised in the Statement of accounts each year. This is presented to the Audit Committee each June.

The Summary of Accounts includes brief summaries of the accounting statements included in the Statement of Accounts and in addition a review of our performance.

Annual Audit Letter

These annual reports summarise the findings from the Audt Commissions audits. It includes messages arising from the audit of our financial statements and the results of the work they have undertaken to assess our arrangements to secure value for money in our use of resources.

Investors In People

After achieving Investors in People (IIP) accreditation in August 2008 we committed ourselves to maintaining the standard and introduced a number of improvements. In 2009 the national standard was changed and a new assessment process introduced. In July 2011 we were re-assessed against the new standard and notification was received in August 2011 that we had achieved IIP recognition at Silver level.

IIP is a national standard that seeks to encourage organisations to develop their people and ensure that everyone performs well. To achieve this, people need the right knowledge, skills and motivation to work effectively. The Standard provides a framework to ensure that organisations achieve this. The Standard is split into three criterion as below:

  1. Plan – develop strategies to improve the performance
  2. Do – take action to improve the performance
  3. Review – evaluate and improve performance

The Standard focuses on issues such as:

  • The effectiveness of appraisals
  • How learning and development is identified
  • What induction processes we have for new starters or those changing jobs
  • The opportunities available to employees to suggest improvements
  • What support managers provide to individuals and teams
  • How the Council and managers communicate with employees
  • How learning and development is evaluated to ensure value for money
