Young voice
The Bolsover District Young Voice meets formally 4 five times a year. All secondary schools in the district (Tibshelf, Shirebrook, Bolsover, Frederick Gent, Heritage and Stubbin Wood) elect or nominate six young people as Youth Councillors each – 36 in total.
Young Voice was started as a pilot project and has since gone from strength to strength. Our Executive has also endorsed the continuation of the Youth Council and we award the Youth Council a budget to spend on projects it identifies each year.
The aims of the Youth Council are to:
- Build on existing consultation with young people to inform improvements to service delivery;
- Engage young people in Bolsover in local democratic processes and institutions;
- Provide schools with a learning tool to enhance the teaching of citizenship;
- Develop a positive image of young people across the district.
Youth Councillors worked on the following projects in 2010/11:
- Took part in a consultation exercise which informed the Green Space Strategy (parks and open spaces)
- Carried out a number of litter picks within the community
- Contributed to a 'diverse' project 'bringing people together from different backgrounds' to raise awareness of diversity within the community
- Took part in a consultation exercise over proposed changes to local government democracy models
- Received presentations on 'Operation Relentless', an anti-social behaviour initiative and 'Rhubard Farm', which raised awareness of the environmental social enterprise project aimed at providing work, employment, outdoor skills and learning
- Had a tour of the Council's Riverside Depot which informed about a sustainable green building and raised awareness of council services and future employment opportunities
- Contributed to an Environment Scrutiny Review and made a recommendation which was taken on board
- Took part in workshops to build their confidence and to improve their skills for taking part in meetings
We have also produced an
evaluation report for the 2010/11 Youth Council Programme. For further information, please telephone 01246 242353 or submit an enquiry form
