Voting & elections

Armed Forces Voters

If you are a member of the armed forces and are registered as an elector, you will be entitled to vote in Parliamentary, Local and European Elections in the UK.

Service personnel and their spouses resident in the UK may register in either of two ways. They may be included on the annual canvass form which is sent to every household in August/September, or they may register as service voters.

In order to register as a service voter you will need to complete a service declaration every 5 years, which will be the best option if you are likely to be posted overseas.  This is available from your unit, the Electoral Registration Officer or from aboutmyvote.co.uk.  You need to register at an address where you have lived in the past or where you would be living if you were not posted overseas.

If you are likely to be posted overseas, you may wish to apply to vote by post or by proxy. You can telephone us on 01246 242424 or submit an enquiry form for an application form. Postal votes are sent out approximately one week before polling day, so if you are not likely to be able to receive and return a postal vote in that time, it would be better to appoint a proxy.
