Verges
In most cases the grass verges beside roads and footways, up to the boundary wall, hedge or fence, are part of the road. It is therefore the responsibility of Derbyshire County Council to maintain the verges, including cutting the grass.
As far as possible we are also responsible for keeping the verges in a safe condition and clear of obstacles, for example advertising signs. This is especially important at road junctions or accesses where clear visibility for drivers and pedestrians is essential.
Collection and removal of litter, fly tipped material, abandoned cars, etc. from the verge is the responsibility us.
If you see someone littering or fly tipping please telephone our Contact Centres immediately on 01246 242424.
You must give us the location, description of offender, time, date and any vehicle that may have been used – we will then do the rest and take the appropriate action against any offender.
Although we cannot stop people throwing down litter or dumping their rubbish, our Enforcement Officers patrol the district on the lookout for potential offenders. Where an offender who has dropped litter can be identified we will issue an immediate Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) of £50, payable within 14 days. If this FPN is not paid, then the offender will be taken to court.
