Introduction to STEP

The purpose of this is to increase the quantity, quality and diversity of people involved in volunteering and leadership.

It enables community clubs to develop people as coaches/leaders and deploy them as active volunteers.  See details below of courses currently available.

1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Football

This course offers an opportunity for aspiring football coaches to be supported in developing their knowledge of how to effectively coach a local club or school team.

Venue: Shirebrook Academy, NG20 8QF

Dates: 2 weekends and 2 weekday evenings starting on Saturday 22nd June 2013

Sports Leaders UK Awards & Qualifications

Members of our Sports Development Team are qualified to tutor various Sports Leaders UK nationally recognised qualifications and awards, these include:

  • Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership
  • Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership
  • Level 1 Award in Dance Leadership
  • Women, Get Set, Go
  • Day Certificate in Sports Leadership

Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership

This qualification can be completed by candidates aged 16 years and over. The course aims to develop generic leadership skills that can be applied to a variety of sporting situations as well as contributing to the personal development of candidates. The award prepares individuals so that they can independently lead, safe, purposeful and enjoyable sporting and recreational activities.

Candidates complete 7 units of work which includes topics on session planning, communication, improving fitness and delivering competitions, candidates also have to complete a Basic First Aid certificate. After completing units 1-7 individuals are required to complete 10 hours of voluntary leadership in their communities, under the supervision of another member of staff such as a Head Coach, Sports Development Officer or Youth Worker.

Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership

The Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership provides the ideal starting point for candidates aged 13 years and over who wish to develop their leadership skills, whilst under the direct supervision of their tutor.  The syllabus is designed to develop generic leadership skills that can be applied to a variety of sports and/or recreational situations as well as contributing to the personal development of the candidate.

Our Sports Development team support the delivery and assessment of these courses within the secondary schools across Bolsover District.

Level 1 Award in Dance Leadership

The Level 1 Award in Dance Leadership is a nationally recognised qualification which can be completed by anyone aged 13 years and over. The course enables successful candidates to lead small groups in simple dance activities, whilst under the direct supervision of their tutor.  The qualification teaches generic leadership skills such as organisation, planning, communication and teamwork through the medium of dance. It is a fun and practical qualification with no entrance requirements or final examinations to sit. The Level 1 Award in Dance Leadership consists of six units of work including one hour demonstration of leadership, which has to be completed after all of the taught aspects have been delivered.

Courses have been delivered in secondary schools as well as in the community.

Women, Get Set, Go

Women, Get Set, Go is a personal development programme that has been specifically designed for women and girls (14 years and over).  The course encourages women and girls to communicate with confidence, value their own skills, understand how the world of sport and leadership works, and to develop a personal action plan for their future involvement in sports leadership.

Day Certificate in Sports Leadership

This award can be completed by candidates aged 16 years and over.  The course has been designed to support adults in a variety of different settings including community groups, primary and secondary schools, uniformed organisations and sports clubs that are affiliated to the local authority.  Candidates who have completed this award can develop their leadership skills further by progressing on to the Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership.
