Pest Control

We provide advice and treatment services covering a range of domestic pests such as rats, mice, fleas and wasps. This service is for domestic premises only and adheres to our PDF icon Pest Control policy.

No treatment in commercial premises will be undertaken

The following treatment/charges from 1st January 2011 – 31st March 2012.

  1. The Pest Control service will be provided within the boundary of domestic premises only for the eradication of:
    • Rats inside and outside
    • Mice inside
    • Cockroaches
    • Fleas
    • Wasps inside and outside
    • Squirrels (in Council owned properties)
    • Bed bugs
    • Any other insect pests, advice only
  2. From 1st January 2010 to 31st March 2012 the cost of pest control treatments is £42.83 for each of the following treatments listed below (for chargeable treatments you will be required to pay for your treatment in advance. You can now pay by debit card over the phone whilst you make an appointment for your treatment.)
  3. There is no charge for rats (inside or outside) or mice inside the property.
  4. Outside the hours of 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Thursday and 9 am to 4 pm Friday the charge from 1st January 2011 to 31st March 2012 is £67.21 inclusive of VAT. Out of hours service is only available in emergency circumstances and is at the discretion of the Head of Regeneration.
  5. Every person requesting the service will be charged including Council tenants, private tenants, owner occupiers and landlords.
  6. The following service times will be met subject to the workload of the pest control service.  The appointment system may not always accommodate these time periods.
    • Rats inside 1 working day
    • Advice and guidance 2 working days
    • Bed Bugs 5 working days
    • Cockroaches inside 5 working days
    • Fleas inside 5 working days
    • Mice inside 5 working days
    • Wasps Inside/Outside 5 working days
    • Rats Outside 5 working days

From 1st April 2012 the prices for a pest control visit will rise to £45.23 per visit & £73.94 for an out of hours visit.

During a recent survey investigating the reasons why rats were found on residential gardens, the pest control team found that during the three months (November 2008 – January 2009), 27% of the rat infestations that were dealt with in gardens in the Bolsover district were due to bird feeding. Using the wrong sort of waste in a compost bin can also attract rats. The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health has guidance on Good Composting Practice.

Whilst the authority appreciates the joy of feeding birds and encouraging them into your garden, sensible feeding is important, so as not to encourage unwelcome visitors. Advice on feeding birds responsibly is available from the RSPB website.

Since 1st October 2006, all local authorities have a legal duty to have regard to the conservation of biodiversity in exercising their functions. As a consequence, the authority does not provide a service for the destruction of any species of Bees, except in exceptional circumstances.
