Health & Wellbeing

We want to create a more vibrant and healthy place for people to live and work. 

We provide opportunities local people to get active, get healthy and get involved thus increasing participation in getting started, staying and succeeding in sport, and physical activity. Our two main schems are Bolsover Wellness and Five:60.

Bolsover Wellness

The Bolsover Wellness Programme specifically aims to address the life expectancy target set by government by increasing levels of physical activity which in turn will reduce obesity, reduces the risk of stroke, CHD, Diabetes and a range of other illnesses.

By targeting the most 'at risk' groups this will have a positive impact on life expectancy levels across Bolsover District, which is worryingly lower than the national average. In addition physical activity also contributes to improvements in mental health, long term limiting illnesses, and the mobility and independence of people in older age.

G.P. Referral Exercise Programme
Clients are referred onto the scheme by their GP or practice nurse for a variety of conditions from weight reduction to cardiac conditions.  An appropriate physical activity programme is devised for each client and leisure facility programme time has been made available with 30 specialist sessions per week on offer. Sessions include gym sessions, chair based exercise, circuits, aqua fit, specialist swimming sessions, cardiac rehabilitation and BLF active, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) rehabilitation classes. The programme has also added nutritional advice through one to one support by a qualified nutritionist.

Clients referred onto the scheme get 12 weeks free followed by another 12 weeks at a discounted rate. This results in a high retention rate and leads to continued exercise.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Phase IV
Patients who have completed phase III after a heart attack or other cardiac surgery at our local hospitals are then referred to our Phase IV classes.

The Phase IV Cardiac Rehabilitation classes run for 12 weeks free of charge. On completion of the 12 weeks course the clients then gain access to the G.P. Referral programme.

Chair Based Exercise
Chair Based Exercise sessions involve mobility, stretching, cardiovascular and strength work in a group environment. These activities are specially designed to help clients cope with daily activities and are key to falls prevention.

Chair Based Exercise is a perfect progression to more intense activities such as the gym and other sessions within the Bolsover Wellness Programme.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
COPD is a term used for a number of conditions; including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. COPD leads to damaged airways in the lungs, causing them to become narrower and making it harder for air to get in and out of the lungs. The word 'chronic' means that the problem is long-term.

Our qualified exercise professionals run exercise maintenance classes for people with chronic lung disease. These classes last up to an hour and will typically consist of exercises designed to improve walking, some chair-based exercise and exercises designed to help manage Breathlessness. Every participant is given their own individually tailored programme based on their abilities and goals, as well as a BLF Exercise Diary to help monitor progress. Classes take place in safe, accessible venues and instructors are fully insured.

In order to attend the classes you will need a referral from either pulmonary rehabilitation or from your healthcare professional. A course usually lasts between six and 12 weeks. After your course has ended, you may be referred to the Bolsover Wellness Programme to carry on with your exercises.

Five:60

Our Five:60 scheme aims to help stem the rise in childhood obesity from reception to year 6 children by increasing levels of physical activity and encouraging children, parents and teachers to make the necessary lifestyle changes to become more active and promote the benfits of a well balanced diet.

The activites are led by an exercise and fitness specialist in curriculum time as part of the schools PHSE timetable. The specialist is supported by a teacher during each session who assists in coaching and mentoring participants over a 12-week programme. The exercise and fitness specialist can then refer suitable participants to a special weekly after school Five:60 activity club which will help to signpost interested children and families to other mainstream physical activity sessions.

It is hoped that by the end of the 12 week programme all participants will be undertaking 60 minutes of physical activity a day and eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables.

Jogging & Walking Groups

Jogging and walking are great ways to keep fit and healthy. It's easy, it's free, you can do it anywhere, at anytime with no special equipment. It really is exercise for life. We have a number of groups in the District that encourage people to become fitter and be more active whilst enjoying the beautiful countryside the area has to offer.

Jogging
We are part of Jog Derbyshire, an established network of community based jogging groups through which anyone who is new to jogging, or has not run for a long time can be guided through a series of gentle walking and jogging programmes led by a qualified Jog Leader.

There are several Jogging Networks already established in Bolsover District, with new groups emerging all the time.

  • Bolsover Bounders - Every Wednesday at 6.30pm, meets in the Police car park, Sherwood Lodge.
  • Clowne Gentle Joggers - Every Tuesday at 7.00pm, meets at Clowne Community Centre.
  • Forest Gump Joggers - Every Tuesday at 5.00pm, meets at Frederick Gent School, South Normanton car park.
  • Jog Creswell - Every Wednesday at 7.00pm, meets at Creswell Leisure Centre.
  • Pinxton Plodders - Every Wednesday at 6.00pm, meets at Pinxton Community Centre.
  • South Normanton Striders - Every Monday at 6.30pm, meets at Frederick Gent School, South Normanton.

Family Walking Groups - Pinxton and South Normanton

Family walk (195kb) to a nearby park where there will be an instructor led outdoor fun family fitness session followed by a walk back to your original starting point. The walks will take place in Pinxton and South Normanton and are free of charge but the fitness sessions cost £1.50 each.

Bring Your Buggy Walk

Takes place every Tuesday from 2-2.45pm at Shirebrook Leisure Centre.  Attend your first session for free then £2.50 thereafter.  For more information contact Linda at Shirebrook Leisure Centre on 01623 748313.
