These can be anything from Swine Flu to Foot and Mouth disease. For further information please visit the Health Protection Agency or telephone 01246 242424 or submit an enquiry form

Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984 Paupers Funeral

In certain circumstances, we are responsible for arranging the funeral of any person who has died and where it appears that no other agency or persons are making suitable arrangements for the disposal of the body.

The Council has a duty under section 46 of the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984 to "cause to be buried or cremated the body of any person who has died or found to be dead" within the district & where it appears that "no suitable arrangements for the disposal of the body have been or are being made".

The Council is entitled to recover the costs of the funeral from the estate of deceased, in the form of a civil debt recoverable within 3 years. For more information on this you can read Section 46 of the Public Health (Control of Diseases) Act 1984.
