Young people aged 16 to 24 year-old across Bolsover District are being given the chance to gain work experience and training to help them get a job.
The initiative is part of our successful Trainee/Apprenticeship which offers help in writing a CV, interview practice, work placements and achieving qualifications in functional skills, Maths and English.
Council Leader Councillor Ann Syrett said, “It’s not easy for young people to get onto the work ladder so we want to help kick-start young people’s careers by offering them an insight into a variety of industries.
“There is no doubting that the range of skills you can acquire as a trainee - from hands-on work experience to skills essential in any job - will stand you in good stead for the future.”
The five-month unpaid traineeship programme, supported by Babington Business College, helps young people to become accustomed to life in the workplace that could lead to an apprenticeship with us.
To be eligible for the programme, young people must live in Bolsover District, have an interest in working across a variety of roles within the public sector and currently not in education, employment or training. Financial support to assist young people with their expenses may be available.
Rhianne Knightley, who has worked her way through the programme and is currently a Business Admin Apprentice at the Council said, “Being an Apprentice has allowed me to learn new skills and earn money at the same time! Completing my NVQ has also been made easier as I have physically done the tasks that I have to write and talk about.
“So far I have achieved a Level 2 in Business Administration and have just started my Level 3. As well as achieving my qualifications I feel that I have also acquired a lot of experience that will help me to keep moving forward.”
Once completed, the programme allows students to apply for an apprenticeship position at either Bolsover District Council or North East Derbyshire District Council.
Experience can then be gained in a variety of different roles including grounds maintenance, customer service, business administration and leisure.
Businesses across Bolsover District can now tap into a fund to help them grow and create jobs.
The Business Growth Fund (BGF), which we have made available will provide grants between £1,000 and £10,000 towards project costs.
The BGF can provide grants, of up to 90% of eligible costs based upon the businesses ability to achieve economic growth and/or jobs growth within the District.
Council Leader, Councillor Ann Syrett said, “We need to do all we can to support businesses and encourage job creation, so this fund is the latest in a long line of initiatives we are running to help local businesses succeed”.
“Local independent businesses contribute greatly to our economy and their viability is of high importance. That’s why we have committed to supporting them and I would encourage businesses who can demonstrate growth potential to contact us to see if they are eligible”.
The funding can be used for a variety of projects, which need to be completed by December 2018, including:
- Extending and improving premises;
- Apprentice costs directly related to business development/diversification;
- Marketing and website development to boost trade;
- Business growth expenditure (equipment, machinery);
- Business start-up costs.
John McMahon, Director of John McMahon School of Woodworking said, “The business advice and financial help we received from Bolsover District Council helped us grow to around 80 students on our books; nearly everyone who attends the beginner course gets addicted and keeps coming back.”

Planning fee increases
From 17 January 2018, the Government are introducing an increase of 20% on planning fees.
Regulations to introduce the 20% fee increase were made on 20 December 2017. Our planning fees will therefore increase from 17 January 2018. The new legislation is part of The Town and Country Planning (Fees for Applications, Deemed Applications, Requests and Site Visits) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2017.

A new service to help bring empty properties back into use has been launched in Bolsover District and North East Derbyshire District.
Both Councils have joined forces to launch the service with the aim of reducing the number of empty properties across the area, bringing them back into use for the benefit of families and individuals.
The new system can be used for either landlords wishing to rent or sell their property and is completely free of charge.
Bolsover District Council Cabinet Member for Social Enterprise, Councillor John Ritchie said, “Demand for housing is increasing, so we want to do all we can to bring back into use any empty properties across the area. The longer a home is left empty the more likely it is to attract anti-social behaviour, to fall into disrepair and to become a source of anxiety to nearby residents. That’s why we are doing all we can to assist owners and landlords with returning their properties to use.”
All you need to do is register your empty property with the relevant council and they will advertise your property on their website for free. They will also put you in contact with people who may be interested in purchasing or renting it.
The property must be registered as being empty for more than six months and proof of ownership must be provided. If you are a landlord then proof that you are an accredited landlord must also be provided.
North East Derbyshire District Council Cabinet Member for Housing, Councillor Bette Hill said, “We know how hard it is for people to get a mortgage or find a home that meets your needs. That’s why we are introducing this new service which will not only bring back into use an empty property, but also help people find a suitable home. It’s a win-win as far as we are concerned.”

From hair-dryers to hedge-trimmers, fairy lights to fridges and toasters to TVs, there’s a wide range of household appliances you can take to Derbyshire County Council’s recycling centres. And from 2 January, you can exchange them for a golden ticket – which means you could be quids in.
Simply ask for your golden ticket from a member of staff at any of the county council’s nine recycling centres, type in your unique ticket number online at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/electric and find out if you’re an instant winner. The more items you recycle, the more tickets you’ll get.
The competition prizes are being funded by Advantage Waste Brokers – the contractor which works on behalf of the county council to collect and recycle electrical items taken to its recycling centres.

- straighteners and hairdryers
- washers and dryers
