Health authorities

The health care you receive is managed and governed by trusts and health authorities. For Bolsover district this is split between the Derbyshire County Primary Care Trust and the Derbyshire Community Health Services.

Derbyshire County Primary Care Trust (PCT)

We lead the NHS in Derbyshire County, working with you to spend public money on improving local health and health services.

We were established on 1 October 2006, taking the place of six smaller Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) across Derbyshire. We are the eighth largest in the UK and cover a population of approximately 750,000 with an overall budget of over £1 billion.

NHS Derbyshire County's main duties include:

  • Assessing, improving and protecting the health and well-being of Derbyshire's registered population
  • Reducing health inequalities across the county
  • Commissioning (buying) a range of safe and effective healthcare services from the best healthcare providers
  • Ensuring equitable and accessible services are available to all patients

Derbyshire Community Health Services

Derbyshire Community Health Services (DCHS) is a large and complex organisation employing more than 5,000, staff with an annual income of approximately £148 million.

DCHS was formed in October 2006, bringing together community services from six predecessor Primary Care Trusts, and is the main community services provider for people in Derbyshire.

It is one of the largest PCT provider organisations in the country, offering a range of 48 different services. On an average day:

  • 200 people will be seen in DCHS minor injury units
  • 400 elderly people will be cared for in our community hospital beds
  • 1,600 patients will be supported by our district nurses
  • 140 people will visit our outpatient clinics.
We have operated very successfully as an arms-length management organisation for more than two years. From April 2009, we have operated as a fully autonomous provider organisation (APO) building on the firm foundations of the past two years.
