Harassment Advice and Support

How to respond to hate incidents

A hate incident is motivated by someone’s prejudice against or hatred of their victim. It may not be a crime as defined by law, but their actions are hostile and intended to cause offence or hurt to someone because of their:

  • race, colour, ethnic origin, nationality or national origins
  • religion or belief
  • gender identity
  • sexual orientation
  • disability.

Public authorities have a legal duty to record all racist and hate incidents. Bolsover District Council treats all racist and hate incident reports very seriously, including verbal abuse and graffiti, and we accurately record all those reported to us.

All incidents are fully investigated by the appropriate department and a copy of the investigation report is sent to the Equality Improvement Officer. If you think you have been a victim or have witnessed a hate incident, you can contact the Equality Improvement Officer by telephoning 01246 242407 or 01246 242323 or submit an enquiry form

More information on discrimination and harassment can be found on the website of the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
