5 Year Housing Supply
Planning Policy Statement on Housing (PPS 3) was issued by the Government in November 2006. Local Planning Authorities are required to assess the extent to which they can maintain a five year supply of land for housing. PPS 3 is a highly significant document which influences how we plan our area and the decisions we make on individual planning applications for housing.
PPS 3 indicates that for sites to be deliverable they need to be: available (the site is available now), suitable (the site offers a suitable location for development now and would contribute to the creation of sustainable communities), and achievable (there is a reasonable prospect that housing on the site will be deliverable on the site within five years).
We have updated the assessment of our 5-year supply of deliverable housing sites. Based on this update, the Planning Committee at its meeting on the 26th October 2011 set out its guidelines that will be used in the assessment of new applications for residential development in situations when the Council does not have a five year supply of housing.
