Benefits of working for the Council
We offer many benefits to our employees and listed below are a range of these to help you appreciate that we take our employees welfare very seriously. We have five directorates that deliver a variety of services and functions.
Because we offer flexible working practices....
We operate a range of flexible working practices including job sharing, flexi time, and annualized hours. Our flexi time scheme allows employees to vary their starting and finishing times to suit personal needs, subject to the needs of the job. We also have an extensive range of working patterns which gives employees even greater flexibility in their working hours, including home working and compressed working weeks, provided that the needs of customers and the service are not compromised.
Because we offer generous leave provisions....
- Chief Executive Officer receives 33 days annual leave in a full year regardless of the amount of service
- Chief Officers receive 31 days annual leave in a full year regardless of the amount of service
- All Other Employees receive 22 days annual leave in a full year, raising to 27 after 5 years local government service.
- Bank Holidays - You are allowed 8 bank holidays per year which are fixed and a further three fixed concessionary days between Christmas and New Year bank holidays. Employees who work between Christmas and New Year receive no concessionary days as these are included in the annual leave entitlement i.e. 25/30 days
- Maternity Leave - All pregnant women are entitled to maternity leave, regardless of how long they have worked for us. If, however, you have more than 26 weeks service at the 15th week before the expected week of childbirth you will be entitled to paid leave at 9/10ths for 6 weeks and half pay for 12 weeks. You will also qualify for Statutory Maternity Pay for 39 weeks if you have paid enough National Insurance. This is then supplemented by unpaid leave up to a maximum of 52 weeks.
- Maternity Support Leave - Anyone who cares for the mother of the baby is entitled to 5 days leave at full pay, which is taken at or around the time of the birth.
- Paternity Leave (including Adoption) - If you are a father-to-be or you will be responsible with the mother for bringing up a child, you may qualify for paternity leave and pay (subject to the qualifying conditions). This is Ordinary Statutory Paternity Leave, Maternity Support Leave and Additional Statutory Paternity if you meet the qualifying conditions.
- Adoption Leave - This provides for the same entitlement as the maternity leave scheme for the adoptive parent.
- Compassionate Leave - Up to 5 days are available for reasons of bereavement.
Because we offer good quality learning and development....
From the moment you join us, an induction programme, which is jointly carried out by Human Resources and Department Representatives, is undertaken to ensure you quickly settle into your new post. Part of this process is to look at your initial development needs.
In addition to this, we have an Appraisal Scheme, which is undertaken annually with a six month review. As part of this process you will do a training needs analysis with your appraiser and complete an Appraisal and Learning and Development Plan. We operate a range of in-house courses, as well as externally delivered events.
Employees also have the opportunity to undertake qualification training based on the requirements of the post.
Leadership/Management competencies have been designed and implemented for Chief Executive Officer, Directors, Heads of Service, Middle Managers, Junior Managers and Team Leaders through the Appraisal system. There are also competencies for employees included in the appraisal form.
Because we look after the health and safety of our employees....
We take our duty of care to employees very seriously and have many mechanisms relating to workplace safety issues. In addition, we provide a comprehensive occupational health service with access to an occupational health nurse/doctor, who can advise on medical and welfare problems.
