Neutering Your Pet
Thousands of healthy pets are destroyed every year because there are not enough homes for them, costing the UK taxpayer millions of pounds in boarding fees, vets bills and warden services.
If you adopt a pet then it is your responsibility to make sure that is neutered to stop unwanted litters being born or being discarded later by new owners once they realise they can no longer care for their new puppy, kitten or rabbit. A pet should be neutered from the age of six months.
There are also behavioural and health benefits from neutering your pet:
- It will stop male cats spraying, getting in to fights or wandering off and getting lost/injured
- It may make your pet calmer and lessen their aggression.
- It will stop male dogs running off and may make them more sociable and easier to handle.
- Your spayed female will not attract the unwanted attention of males and will stop having twice annual seasons.
- The chance of your pet developing a disease associated with the reproductive system will be far less likely.
Many charities offer help towards the financial costs of neutering, so take advice from them if you need help. Animals adopted from rescue centres are usually already neutered. Vets also vary in the amount they charge for neutering. However, it remains the responsibility of the owner to neuter their pets & being able to afford the cost of neutering should be a consideration when taking it on.
For more information on the
The Benefits of Neutering your pet, call PUP - the Prevention of Unwanted Pets on 01623 742409/01773 776533. We occasionally have dog neutering vouchers donated to us. If you are interested in neutering your dog, please call us for more details. If we have run out of vouchers, we will offer advice and take your contact number so we can call you when we recieve more vouchers.
