Councillors

There are 37 councillors (also known as 'members') covering 20 wards. The towns of - Bolsover, Clowne, Shirebrook and South Normanton - have several wards and sometimes up to three councillors for each one. Each councillor is elected for a term of four years, with the last election in May 2011.

Councillors are elected to represent their constituents and to take decisions upon Council services and policies.

They can claim allowances for carrying out Council duties. Some councillors also receive special responsibility allowances for undertaking specific roles such as a portfolio holder (Cabinet Member) or Chairman of a Committee. The Chairman of the Council is elected every year by the Annual Council meeting, usually in May.
