Councillors and committees

We are run by 37 democratically-elected councillors who are responsible for making decisions on behalf of the local community about local services.

The majority of these decicions are made by councillors at committees and meetings in accordance with our constitution.
 
We operate a streamlined and effective decision making system –  A Leader with a Cabinet - with an Executive and 3 Scrutiny Committees. There are also other committee’s such as Planning, Licensing, Standards and Equalities to deal with regulatory matters and Standards Committee to deal with the ethical framework and members conduct issues.

We are required to publish a Forward Plan of key decisions listing when we will make decisions on major issues.

We publish meeting papers before a meeting is due to take place and we also publish the minutes after it has taken place. Many of our meetings are open to the public to view. Find out more in the committees section.
