The Food Safety Service is concerned with advice, inspection, and alerts regarding all aspects of Food Safety.
Our officers carry out routine inspections of all food businesses in the district to a programme set by risk assessment to ensure hygienic standards are maintained and food offered for sale is safe to eat.
Officers also carry out investigations and give advice on notifications received about food poisoning, infectious diseases and food complaints. You can download information sheets on the following types of food poisonings:
Health and safety matters in food premises are carried out as part of a routine inspection programme to protect the health and safety of those in a working environment.
We have a range of enforcement powers available to us under the Food legislation. The service responds to Food Alerts from the Food Standards Agency by taking action to withdraw food products from the food chain or giving advice where there is a risk to health.

If you are planning to start a new catering business, you must register your premises with us at least 28 days before opening.
This applies to most types of food business, including catering businesses run from home, and mobile or temporary premises such as stalls and vans. Telephone our Contact Centres on 01246 242424 or submit an enquiry form for more information on how to register. If you use two or more premises you will need to register all of them. Alternatively you can download an application form.
If food premises are used by several catering businesses (for example a village hall or conference centre) the person who allows the premises to be used for this purpose is responsible for registering them.
New regulations require all food businesses to have a documented food safety management system based on the principles of HACCP. Although this may sound onerous, small catering business can get a free guidance pack called ‘Safer Food and Better Business’ from the Food Standards Agency.

The guide has been produced by Derbyshire Chief Environmental Health Officer Food Liaison and Health and Safety Liaison Group for use by Environmental Health departments throughout the country to help you comply with all relevant food hygiene and health and safety legislation.
