Bolsover Brass Summer School - A Triumphant Success
Over 35 participants attended Bolsover District Council’s first ever Brass Summer School on 22-28 July 2012 at Heritage High in Clowne.
Participants were led by the internationally renowned Ian Porthouse and joined by experienced tutors Mark Wilkinson, David Hirst, Helen Williams, Glyn Williams, John Barber, Gavin Saynor and Mark Landon.
Participants had a varied week of activities following tutorials, learning new skills and techniques and taking part in full rehearsals including performing at some of the area’s main tourist attractions - Hardwick Hall and Creswell Crags.
One of the participants said, “The Bolsover Brass Summer School is the best”.
They also attended an Invocation Concert by the Sinfonia Viva Orchestra and performed alongside Tredegar Town Band in the end of course finale concert at South Normanton.
Cabinet Member for Social inclusion, Councillor Ann Syrett said, “We wanted to make this a truly memorable experience for all those involved and the comments we have had back prove we achieved this. The experience and knowledge the participants got from working with some of the best musicians in the world was second to none – and they also got to meet other musicians and see some of our local tourist hotspots!”
Next year’s Bolsover Brass Summer School will take place on the 20th-26th July 2013. Bookings made by Friday 26th October will be offered an early bird incentive discount of £30 with a deposit of £100 needed to secure a place. There is also the opportunity to pay the remaining costs in 4 instalments to make attending the summer school more financially accessible. The Summer School is available as residential and non-residential for more local people to attend.
Councillor Ann Syrett added, “I would urge anyone who is interested or wants to get involved in music to sign up to this school as soon as possible.”
The 2012 Summer School was supported by European Leader funding, Premier Percussion, Mitie (for the use and management of the incredible facilities) and Heritage High School for helping to make the event happen and providing the catering services.
