Chance To Shine Programme
Every primary and secondary school in Bolsover District is receiving expert cricket coaching after a £7,000 investment was made to help improve the sport and introduce youngsters to the sport.
Together with the Bolsover District School Sports Partnership and five of the Districts cricket clubs (Whitwell, Glapwell, Shirebrook, Langwith and Clowne), we committed to be part of Derbyshire Cricket Boards (DCB) 2012 community programme, Chance to Shine.
An initial financial commitment from all involved - the second highest in Derbyshire - levered in thousands of additional coaching hours from the DCB's level 2 coaches which was valued at over £7,000.
Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion, Councillor Ann Syrett said, “This coaching programme is the largest the District has ever seen, with three-thousand youngsters already receiving nearly three-hundred hours of expert coaching. Cricket often gets pushed aside for sports such as football and rugby, but we hope that this coaching will revitalise the sport and encourage more to take part and join their local club.”
In addition to coaching at the schools, this will be extended to each of the five participating clubs grounds which will range from adult/first team tuition through to community and recreational sessions for youngsters.
Chance to Shine is not just about cricket and learning how to play the game. Young people involved in the programme are developing essential life skills and values, such as leadership, discipline, teamwork and understanding how to win and lose.
