Community Safety

Everyone has the right to feel safe and all of us have a part to play in making Bolsover district safer.

Community Safety can only really be achieved through a joint partnership effort which means local organisations, communities, agencies and individuals working together to combat crime and disorder issues.

We will do everything in our power to reduce crime and disorder, the fear of crime, and communicate what we are doing in our communities. We will set challenging and sustainable targets in our plan that will be measured, monitored and reviewed over the next 3 years. We have a proven record of achievements to date and we intend to build on this to make further reductions in crime and disorder in the Bolsover district.

Crime and Disorder

Derbyshire Police Authority have produced their Local Policing Review 2011 which highlights some of their key achievements in 2010/11 and what their core aims are for 2011 - 2015.

Crime and  are major concerns for many of us and the Bolsover Community Safety Partnership are committed to making the district a safer place to live and work.

Within the section you will find out what you need to know on issues relating to crime prevention, the Police, our CAN Rangers and much, much more.

Further information can also be obtained from the following websites:

Local crime and policing information for England and Wales

The Government has created a national police website to improve public information about crime and policing . On this site anyone can get details of their local policing team and a summary of crimes reported in their neighbourhood.

Enter your postcode, town, village or street into the search box, and get instant access to street-level crime maps and data, as well as details of your local policing team and beat meetings.

This is a useful tool for householders and community activists to find out more about what is happening and take action such as;

  • Improving security measures
  • Watching out for vulnerable people to prevent crime
  • Research and participating more meaningfully in their neighbourhood meetings or forums
  • Neighbourhood Watch coordinators accessing the local crime picture and tailoring their advice and support to watch members based on real threats and risks.

 However, anyone using the site should be aware of the following notes of caution;

  • The government site uses different mapping tools from the police. Derbyshire Constabulary crime information systems will not necessarily show exactly the same data.
  • Some crimes and crime types are not shown at the point where they occurred but they are clustered on the map at a convenient location within the neighbourhood. This is to ensure that individual people or locations are not identified.
  • This means that a crime hot spot may be shown in your street when no crimes have occurred there. The crime could have actually taken place up to 2 miles from the point shown on the map. In some cases the crime may have happened in another borough or even county.
  • Other hot spots may be shown at such places as petrol stations and shops. This is because many minor dishonesty offences take place such as driving off without paying for petrol.
  • There are other reasons for hot spots as well such as local car parks where several cars have been broken into. These do not mean that the area is a “bad area” or it is unsafe for residents. The vast majority of crimes are minor and non violent.

If you have concerns about crime in your area, attend your local forum or neighbourhood meeting, meet your Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team and discuss your concerns with them. Almost all crime types can be prevented or reduced by individual and community action. If you have been a victim of crime you should report it so we can take all necessary action to prevent further problems. You should not worry about your crime report appearing on crime mapping and showing your neighbourhood in a bad light. It is far better that we know about it and can tackle it together with you.

Derbyshire is a safe place to live, work and visit. There are no places where it is not safe for sensible, sober people to go. You should not rely on the national crime mapping for important decisions such as whether to buy or rent a house in a particular neighbourhood. Crime clusters shown on them may not be accurate, can be temporary or seasonal and, most importantly, can be tackled in partnership.
