Leadership Academy

Sport relies on 1.5 million volunteers, officials, coaches, administrators and managers. Step into Sport, an initiative driven by the Youth Sport Trust focuses on young people aged between 9 -19 years and aims to encourage them to undertake an involvement in sports leadership and volunteering. It provides a structured pathway that rewards sports volunteering that will enrich school and community sport. Over 48,000 young people nationally will be involved each year in the programme and the Bolsover Leadership Academy has been introduced to support the students enrolled on the programme in Bolsover district.

There are three steps to the programme:

  • STEP ON (9 to 14 years) Mini Leaders, Young Leaders - During PE lessons students are introduced to sports leadership and volunteering. They learn how to plan and manage their own sports season, helping out during lunchtime running activities for other pupils.
  • STEP IN (14 to 16 years) Sports Leaders Level 1 Award - Young people are slightly older and therefore more confident in taking a lead. Through volunteering they learn the skills to manage and support school based sporting events.
  • STEP OUT (16 to 19 years) Community Sports Leaders Level 2 Award/NGB Level 1 Award - Young people learn how to move from school based to community based volunteering. Our Leadership Academies (14-19) provide the opportunity to refine and develop volunteering skills and experiences.

Bolsover Leadership Academy is an extension to the Step into Sport programme which will signpost volunteering opportunities in school and club settings, provide support and guidance, encourage volunteers to record and monitor their own volunteering hours and will also reward volunteers when voluntary hours are completed.

You can become a member of the Academy once you have completed and recorded a minimum of 10 voluntary hours within a school setting e.g. after school coaching, organising a festival etc, or within a club environment.

The Academy aims to support the work and development of the Bolsover Leadership Academy that is established in all five secondary schools and 1 special school within the district of Bolsover.

Leaders will then be encouraged to go back into school and begin leading sessions in a voluntary capacity, logging their hours along the way.

By time these young leaders reach Year 11, those achieving a high number of voluntary hours will be offered two courses including an Introduction to Fundamentals of Movement and a Sportsability course to start them on the path of industry recognised qualifications.

Enrol today - visit www.blaca.co.uk to apply. You will then be issued with a personal username and password to enable you to access the Leadership Academy website and log your hours. What's more, you'll receive regular updates and opportunities in your school and local community.
