Clowne Conservation Area

We designated the PDF icon Clowne Conservation Area as an area of special architectural and historic interest, the character and appearance of which it is desirable to both preserve and enhance, on 4th May 2005.

It is considered that this special architectural and historic interest is due to the survival of the town's historic core which reflects its agricultural origins and later phases of development that followed the sinking of the nearby Southgate Colliery and the arrival of the railway, together with the archaeological and geological interest of the pleasant open area along Millwood Brook that runs to the north of the Church of St John the Baptist.

The Clowne Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan

We have prepared a PDF icon Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan for the Clowne Conservation Area and we adopted this on 1st March 2006.

The document defines the special character and appearance of the area by assessing the built form, landscape and townscape value and provides guidance on the implementation of certain saved policies in the Bolsover District Local Plan and formulates management proposals for the preservation and enhancement of the Clowne Conservation Area.

This document forms one of the first parts of the Local Development Framework for the area that will deliver the spatial planning strategy, upon which decisions on development proposals will be made.

The implementation of the management of the conservation area is set out in our Historic Environment Scheme.

Public Participation

We received twenty-eight duly made representations during the public participation exercise. Two further representations were received outside the exercise period, which we resolved to consider alongside the duly made representations. These representations were considered and the document was amended to take account of the issues raised.

More information on the public participation in the preparation of this Supplementary Planning Document, including an account of the main issues raised and the changes proposed are contained in the PDF iconAdoption Statement and PDF iconConsultation Statement.
