Climate Change
Imagine a low carbon future.
Everyone would have warm, comfortable homes powered by low cost, locally produced energy. The air would be clean and the surrounding environment would be healthy and green.
There would be huge economic benefits too. Many jobs would be created to deliver and maintain the low carbon future, food and energy would be produced locally, fewer natural materials will be wasted and our green technologies would be exported around the world.
However Climate Change threatens that future. Our current CO2 emissions threaten to cause erratic & devastating weather patterns, increase the risks of flooding, reduce biodiversity, increase the costs of energy, damage our green environments, increase health problems and increase the likelihood of food & resource shortages.
We are committed to playing our part in tackling climate change to achieve energy sustainability in our communities whilst enhancing and protecting our environment.
Together with our partners we are working to make sure we comply with the targets set by the government to achieve reductions in CO2 emissions.

Our Targets and Commitments:
We have signed up to the Nottingham Declaration which commits us to actively reduce our CO2 emissions.
The Government also has National Indicators which commit Bolsover District Council to meeting targets which include:
-
NI185 - To reduce CO2 emissions from our local authority operations
-
NI186 - To reduce CO2 emissions per capita for our District
-
NI188 - To tackle fuel poverty
-
NI187 - To plan to adapt to climate change
-
NI194 - To meet Air Quality standards
We also have our own internal targets regarding climate change. These include:
- By 2011 reduce the fuel consumption of the Council’s vehicle fleet by 10% from 2009 level.
- By March 2011 reduce Council internal waste sent to landfill by 20% from 2006/07 levels.
- Reduce CO2 emissions from Council buildings and transport by 3% year on year.
- Work towards the public sector 10:10 campaign to cut CO2 emissions by 10% in 2010.
- By March 2011 recycle or compost 28.5% of collected household waste per year.
What is the Council doing:
We have implemented a Climate Change Strategy that looks at how we are going to kerb the excesses of modern day 21st Century living and service delivery by looking at our services, looking at our working habits and looking at what message we give out to the people and businesses of our district.
Some of the actions we have taken include:
- 84 m2 of Solar (Photo-Voltaic) Panels have been installed on the roof of the Sherwood Lodge Council building which saves around £1342 and reduces CO2 emissions by 10.2 tonnes annually.
- Between 2008 - 2009 managed 10% reduction in electricity which saved £9,072 and 13.9 tonnes of CO2.
- Consolidated the Oxcroft Lane and South Normaton Depot services into one building located at Doe Lea. The new Riverside Depot building makes annual savings of £25,334 reduces gas usage by up to 68% reduces electricity usage by up to 14.75% reduces water usage by up to 53.3% and saves 143.8 tonnes of CO2 in comparison with the Oxcroft Lane and South Normanton Depot buildings combined.
- Installed variable speed drives to the air handling unit and pool circulation pumps at Creswell Leisure Centre which are expected to deliver annual savings of £2,125 and reduce CO2 emissions per annum by up to 20.8 tonnes.
- Provided 660 energy monitors to Council tenants which could save 6,500 tonnes of CO2 over a 7 year period.
We have already made big improvements in some areas but there is still a long way to go and we can’t do it alone. Reducing our impact on the environment is all our responsibility so we need your help.
