What is a bulky waste collection?
This is a service offered by us so that residents can dispose of large items of domestic waste like furniture which can’t fit into a wheelie bin
What sort of waste can be picked up on a bulky waste collection?
Furniture, domestic electrical appliances such as washing machines and fridges, some garden waste and general household waste.
What can’t be collected on a bulky waste collection?
Any DIY, construction or demolition waste. A good rule of thumb to apply is if the items are commonly regarded as fixtures or fittings in a property then they will not qualify for collection. Some other materials such as chemicals or paint are also excluded.
Examples of items which would not qualify for collection are as follows: Bathroom suites, kitchen units, fitted wardrobes, garden sheds, coal houses, doors, bricks, rubble, concrete, radiators, fireplaces, gas or electric fitted fires, asbestos, loft insulation, water tanks, boilers, fence panels, gates, paving slabs, aerial or satellite dishes, windows, scaffolding, paint, creosote, chemicals, car parts and oil, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, car batteries, tyres, tree trunks/branches, low pressure gas cyclinders.
Please note that the list is not exhaustive and we reserve the right to refuse the collection of any material it considers to be unsuitable for this service.
Do I have to pay for the service?
Yes. There is a variable charge dependent on how many items you want collected. The charges are displayed below. You can pay at any Contact Centre or by debit card over the phone. Payment must be made when the collection is booked. Please note there are no concessions for this service.
Important - Please note that once payment has been accepted for a collection, no cancellations or alterations (including requests to add, reduce or substitute alternative items) can be made and no refunds will be given.
General Bulkies
- 1 - 3 items = £10
- 4 - 6 items = £15
- 7 - 9 items = £20
- 10+ items = a quote will be made with a minimum charge of £30
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)
- 1 item = £10
- 2 items = £15
- 3 items = £20
- 4 items = £25
- 5 items = £30
How do I arrange a collection?
By ringing the Contact Centre on 01246 242424 or by calling in person. The Customer Advisors will take all the necessary details and your payment. They will also provide you with general information including when your waste will be collected.
Where will you collect the waste from?
We will collect it from outside your property, but not from the pavement. Please be specific when requesting a collection where the items will be presented Please note that council employees will not enter your property to remove items nor will they gather and retrieve loose general rubbish for you. General domestic household waste must be presented in bags. Carpets and rugs must be rolled and secured and glass items wrapped in polythene or taped appropriately. Household or garden waste must be presented appropriately in secured bundles or bags (up to 4 x black bags = 1 x item) – scattered waste will not be collected. Please note, we will only collect the items that have been specified when booking the service.
Will you tell me when you’re coming?
When you book the collection you will be given a date when it will be carried out. This will usually take place within 10 working days of your request. If we are unable to collect your waste for any reason, we will notify you and ask that you re-arrange for an alternative collection date.
I have a lot of items for collection, what shall I do?
If you have ten or more items then an officer will contact you to arrange a visit and give an individual quote. There is no charge for this visit and there is no obligation on your part to accept the quote.
I have a particularly heavy item, will you collect this?
If you have an item that is particularly heavy such as a piano, range cooker, sunbed, American style fridge/freezers, organ, etc, please mention this to the Contact Centre when you book. Normal collections are carried out by two employees of the Council and we will need to make arrangements for this before we visit.
I don’t want to pay to have items removed. Can you suggest an alternative?
There are a number of Household Waste Recycling Centres throughout Derbyshire where you can deposit excess household waste free of charge. If you are getting rid of old furniture that is still in good use and someone else could make use of it, why not contact your local
furniture re-use project.
