Biodiversity and Greenprint
The Biodiversity of planet Earth is something that most people are generally aware of, from both natural history programmes on television and from walks in their own local area.
From these experiences, people also understand that this biodiversity is valuable and should be protected. However, how both the global and local biodiversity are protected is less known.
At the national level, the Biodiversity of the United Kingdom is covered by the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. This Biodiversity Action Plan was published in 1994 and contains action plans and targets for 45 habitats and 391 species. These habitats and species were chosen because they are considered to be either globally threatened or are rapidly declining in the UK, i.e. by more than 50% in the last 25 years.
In 1995 the UK Biodiversity Steering Group recommended that Local BAPs should be prepared so that the national objectives could be applied locally.
The Bolsover Greenprint
A Bolsover Greenprint for Biodiversity has been prepared by us and the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust to provide a framework for the conservation of biodiversity within Bolsover district. The Greenprint translates both the UK and Lowland Derbyshire Biodiversity Action Plans (BAPs) to the local level in order to make these BAPs more achievable for us, local groups and communities.
Its purpose is to identify the habitats and species that are present in the district but that are declining or at risk on a national or county wide basis. It also contains recommendations for action and encourage individuals, groups, landowners, farmers and business to become involved in biodiversity conservation within their local area.
Bats
Bats are amazing animals, and an important part of our natural environment. There are 18 species of bat in the UK (17 of which are known to be breeding here), all of which are protected by law because their numbers have decreased so dramatically.
To find out more about bats and how we can opreserve their natural habitat please visit the Bat Conservation Trust website.
