Bolsover Brass Summer School – A Triumphant Success

Think of Bolsover District and you think of iconic attractions such as Hardwick Hall, Creswell Crags and Bolsover Castle; the rugged landscape and close proximity to the Peak District National Park; home to one of the worlds largest Brass Band Festivals and now the Bolsover Brass Summer School.

The summer school was hosted at the newly built innovative Heritage High School in Clowne, with excellent facilities including private practice rooms, internet access, excellent rehearsal facilities and theatre. The offsite accommodation is situated within a short driving distance at the Ibis Hotel, Barlborough.  Participants had a varied week of activities following tutorials and full rehearsals including performing at some of the areas main tourist attractions at Hardwick Hall, Creswell Crags and Renishaw Hall which also including guided tours of the attractions; in addition to attending an Invocation Concert by the Sinfonia Viva Orchestra and performing alongside Tredegar Town Band in the end of course finale concert.

In the words of one of this years participants “The Bolsover Brass Summer School is the best”. So why is Bolsover so different to other leading Brass Summer Schools? This seems to be down to the fact that numbers are managed to ensure that the experience is outstanding for both tutors and participants and that the planned social activities give participants time to experience the local area whilst also performing at the local tourist attractions in the Peak District and Derbyshire area. Finally not to forget the favourite topic of conversation during the week; the tasty food!
