In 2009 we had a target was to create 105 apprenticeships placements as part of our commitment to providing job opportunities for young people and the long term unemployed. We exceeded this and created 106.
Due to the success of this programme in February 20th 2012 a further 30 candidates, aged between 16 and 24 and from the Bolsover district, were inducted on a new programme.
This second phase is funded through the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, Working Neighbourhoods Fund and placement partner contributions. The placements last for 12 months allowing apprentices to gain work experience and qualifications. The apprentices received advice from the Money Advice Service and achieved a level one qualification in employment skills during their first week on programme alone.
Apprentices are placed with one of the following partners for the duration of the programme:
- The Bolsover School
- Chesterfield Royal Hospital
- Clowne and District Community Transport
- Groundwork Creswell
- The Meadows Community School
- NEDDC
Apprenticeship frameworks indertaken include:

2010-2012 Phase one
The apprenticeships were made available to those aged 16 years and above who were at the risk of being long-term unemployed.
The first 16-18 year old apprenticeships were placed internally throughout the Council in January 2010. We offered and filled 15 apprenticeships in total across, administration, decorating, multiskilled building, HGV mechanical engineering, accounts, pest control
and leisure.
The Apprenticeship Programme has offered young people an environment to work, develop their skills, career, and use the programme as a pathway to future opportunities. It has allowed apprentices to leave with an apprenticeship framework and work experience.
This strand of the programme is funded through Working Neighbourhoods Fund (WNF) Apprentices aged 18+ were recruited via Jobcentre Plus to ensure that the funding eligibility criteria was met. In the main apprentices from this age group were placed externally with one of our partners.
This strand of the programme aimed to offer access to an apprenticeship framework which includes a NVQ’s as one element. Although there was no guarantee of employment at the end of the programme a number of apprentices, who have achieved their frameworks, have successfully found work on leaving the programme. Some are now considering continuing to develop their education including one who has secured a university place.
20 opportunities were ring fenced for areas of high unemployment for those who live in deprived areas of Bolsover District. This strand of the programme was funded through Future Jobs Fund (FJF) and The Working Neighbourhood Fund (WNF) in addition to placement partner contributions.

What is an Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships have changed many times over the years and although they have a common framework they may contain different types of modules which will be specific to whichever career path you decide to take. For more information visit the Apprenticeships website.
An apprenticeship allows you to earn while you learn. You can gain recognised qualifications as you work. This is ideal for those who don’t like to sit in a class all day.
